We are taught to be lesser than ourselves. Yet – anything that we are taught can be unlearned. The past does not have to become the future.
I once saw a lady teach her daughter to be lesser-than. Another woman said to the little girl “You’re so pretty!” to which the girl replied “I know!” Her Mom was aghast and said “Don’t say that – that’s rude. Say ‘Thank you’ instead.” The girl then sheepishly said “Thank you” to the woman. While the Mom was trying to teach the girl manners, she actually taught her to downplay who she is. She taught her how to be less than herself.
Confidence is often seen as arrogance in girls and women. We are strongly discouraged from being proud of ourselves, of being sure of who we are. We are taught to be lesser-than.
Perhaps misery does indeed love company. Perhaps, deep down, people are miserable, so they want to drag everyone down to their level. The world is full of mediocrity. Don’t join them. Be proud of the unique and beautiful child of God that you are. To be anything less is to insult God’s handiwork. Today is a good day to admit to yourself how amazing and wonderful you really are.
